This is a scrying or divination tool with solid black, often black paint or cloth, covering the reflective mirror. Although called a black mirror, a standard reflective mirror can also be used, as well as water in a bowl, or an outdoor pond or lake, as well as the iconic crystal ball. It is believed that scrying will bring forth information from one's subconscious mind or higher self.
